My Sourdough Starter and Your Health Insurance Have a Lot in Common
I have a sourdough starter.
If you have one too, you already know that this is less like owning an ingredient and more like having a small, needy pet living in your refrigerator.
It needs to be fed. It needs attention. It occasionally needs to be brought back from the brink of what appears to be certain death.
And somehow, despite the fact that it is literally flour and water, it has opinions.
After spending enough time making sourdough, though, you start to learn its personality.
You know what it looks like when it’s really ready, not just when it has a few promising bubbles on top. You learn that temperature matters. Timing matters. How it feels matters. And you eventually discover that a beautiful-looking loaf on the outside does not necessarily mean you got everything right on the inside.
Which, naturally, got me thinking about health insurance.
Because apparently I can turn almost anything into a health insurance analogy these days.
Health insurance plans can look pretty fantastic on the surface, too.
Low premium? Great!
Low copays? Even better!
Big network? Lots of benefits? Free stuff?
Where do I sign?
But just like that sourdough starter bubbling away on my counter, looking ready and full of promise, sometimes you have to look a little closer.
What’s the deductible?
Are your doctors actually in the network?
How are your prescriptions covered?
What happens if you need care outside your normal area?
Is there a separate deductible for certain services?
What is your maximum out-of-pocket exposure if this turns out to be a really bad health year?
Suddenly, that shiny plan that looked amazing at first glance may look a little different.
And this is where experience matters.
When I first started making sourdough, I followed every instruction like it was a legal document.
Feed exactly this much.
Wait exactly this long.
Fold exactly this many times.
Now?
I can look at the dough and have a pretty good idea of what it needs.
That didn't happen because I became some sort of sourdough whisperer. It happened because I've made enough loaves to recognize the signs.
Some were beautiful.
Some were delicious.
And I'm fairly certain a few could have been used as construction materials.
Health insurance is a little like that, too.
After years of working with different plans, carriers, networks, formularies, deductibles, copays, and all the other wonderfully exciting things that make normal people's eyes glaze over, you start to know where to look.
You learn which questions to ask.
You learn that the biggest number on the brochure isn't always the most important number.
And you learn that two plans that look almost identical on paper can work very differently depending on the person using them.
That's why I don't believe choosing health insurance should start with, "Which plan is best?"
It should start with, "What do you need your health insurance to do for you?"
Your doctors. Your prescriptions. Your budget. Your health. Your travel. Your family. Your priorities.
Then we can look beneath the shiny benefits and see how the plan actually works.
Because whether we're talking about sourdough or health insurance, I've learned a few things:
Looking good on the surface isn't enough.
The details matter.
Experience helps.
And sometimes, you really do need someone who knows what all those bubbles mean.
As for my sourdough starter?
It's currently sitting in my refrigerator waiting for me to pay attention to it again.
At least my clients can text me when they need something.
The sourdough just sits there judging me.
